British education magazine Times Higher Education (THE) has released its Asian University rankings for 2023. In Japan, the University of Tokyo was ranked eighth (Ranked 6th last year) and Kyoto University was ranked 18th (Ranked 12th last year), both dropping from the previous year. The top three places have remained the same for the fourth consecutive year, with China’s Tsinghua University at the top, followed by Peking University and the National University of Singapore.
The survey surveyed 669 universities in 31 countries and regions in Asia, including the Middle East. Based on 13 indicators, including the enrichment of the teaching and research environment, the frequency of citations of papers, and the acceptance of overseas students and faculty, Japan has the most universities on the list with 117. There are six universities in the top 100, but that is down from eight the year before.
THE analysis said that “the strength of Japanese universities in Asia has come under great pressure from the rise of China in recent years, but with the support of policies to promote internationalization, the future looks bright.”
In terms of the number of universities on the list, after Japan, China (Mainland) is 95 and India is 75. The largest number of universities in the top 100 is 31 universities in China (Mainland), and the 2nd place is occupied by 11 universities in South Korea. India also entered with 4 universities.
