The Council of the European Union issued a statement announcing the imposition of sanctions against nine Russian citizens under the global human rights sanctions regime.
The sanctions came into effect after the list was published in the Official Journal of the European Union. Those targeted include Deputy Justice Minister Oleg Sviridenko and other judges.
“Today, the Council imposed restrictions on nine individuals under the global human rights sanctions regime,” the statement said.
The sanctions were imposed in connection with the 25-year prison sentence given to Russian opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza on “politically motivated and false charges.”
The target will be banned from entering the EU, and assets located in the EU will be frozen.
Russian opposition figure Vladimir Kara-Murza (designated a “foreign agent” in Russia) was sentenced to 25 years in prison on April 17. According to the press office of the Moscow City Court, 40 diplomats from 25 countries, including the United States, Britain, France and Canada, attended the sentencing.
