President of Brazil Lula Calls for the Protection of Assange

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has called on everyone to protect wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who faces possible extradition to the United States.

Lula said: “I am concerned about the inevitable extradition of the journalist Julian Assange. Assange has done important work to expose the illegal actions of one country against another. He was imprisoned, and democracy and press freedom were not protected. It is important that all of us stand up to protect him.”

His wife, Stella Assange, said Assange, who is currently being held in a British prison, would file a new appeal at London’s High Court on June 13. She said she hoped Assange would not be extradited to the United States.

At the same time, the international human rights protection group Reporters Without Borders said on the 8th that Assange’s last appeal was rejected in full on June 6, so the next appeal will be in the British court of last resort, because the case can only be heard by the European Court of Human Rights.

Assange is accused of triggering the largest leak of information in US history and faces a 175-year prison sentence. Assange is currently trying to appeal to the High Court in London to avoid extradition from Britain.
